Gimme some plain good old customer service

I love Amazon and find it hard to believe that my own sister has never visited the Amazon website. Sometimes I wonder about her.

I love Amazon for the little things that they do. For instance, I download MP3 files from Amazon and occasionally I screw up the download. Whenever I do this, I email Amazon and tell them that I screwed up the download and they quickly send me a new link. I appreciate this and return repeatedly to download a new song.

It’s the little things that cause me to return to a vendor repeatedly.

The gas station near my house is another example. Although there are, several gas stations nearby and this one is always on and popping, I return again and again. When I purchase two or more packs of cigarettes, they throw in a free lighter. Yes, I know the lighter only costs about 60 cents, but that’s not the point. Other gas stations do not do this (please don’t email me telling me how bad smoking is, believe me I know).

The attendants greet me by name and remember that I have two sons, even though they rarely go into the gas station with me. They usually ask me how my sons are doing and will occasionally give me free suckers or gum for my boys. My sons are always happy to receive the free items and I always leave with a smile on my face. I could go to a nearby gas station that is bigger, less crowded and with much less activity going on outside the gas station, but I don’t. I return to the gas station because they treat me well.

How well are you treating your customers?

What small things do companies do that you appreciate?
